I love when my art improves. It really gives me a great feeling of achievement and Pokémon style level up sorta feelings. I evolved last year when I finally got the hang of colouring in the style I wanted. I've gone beyond that now and been able to utilise it in other things I do. Even to the point of using similar techniques in my digital work (which I will be doing more of btw) and because of my improvements, people will even pay money for my art and that makes me truly proud. I don't use refs very often. I should more but the type of things I need to improve on are often things I can't get refs for.
Lately a lot of people have been doing this art meme to see how they've improved this year. I don't need to do it because my improvements have been pretty small in my mind. Plus I'm too lazy to bother right now.
I used to have a fave artist years ago back when I was at college and relatively new to the net. They were awesome, a year younger than me in age and drew the most amazing (in my mind) fantasy work that inspired me and helped me improve my own work. Even now the things I learnt from them remain with me, even though mostly I've moved on. They were the one who's art helped me greatly with dragon wings for example. Years went by and they're still around but their style has changed and I don't like their work much now. It's still good art but just not my type of thing anymore. The style was what drew me to the artist. It was unique and eyecatching. And in a way it's sad they changed their style but that's what I'm talking about, my own style and techniques and everyone elses' change and improve as they learn and grow. As artists we're always learning. The art I did a few years back was good but now its even better. I've even redrawn my characters, keeping the pose and everything the same and seeing how my art has improved between then and now and the results are interesting. Our art grows into something we're happy with. And I'm happy with mine for the most part. I can draw what's in my head and my whole time growing up, that was what I wished I could do.
Right now I think my anatomy is improving. I find the weak spots and mistakes I make and work on them and so it gets better! Here are my latest doodles. I think I'm coming along nicely with male anatomy.
( Under cut )
So that's my artistic new years resolution I guess. Keep on improving!
